Turning Waste into Treasure, Improving Quality and Efficiency: Daqing Petrochemical Generates Tens of Millions in Benefits from Industrial Tail Gas

Relying on technological innovation, the Daqing Petrochemical Company of China National Petroleum Corporation has fully tapped the potential of industrial waste gas resource utilization. Through the catalytic dry gas carbon dioxide recovery device, it has transformed low-value waste gas into valuable resources. Since its commissioning one year ago, the device has operated stably, generating cumulative savings of over 50 million yuan. The annual additional benefits are expected to exceed 70 million yuan. This green technological transformation has contributed to the high-quality development of the petrochemical industry.

Previously, the catalytic dry gas produced by Daqing Petrochemical Company was only utilized as a low-value fuel, resulting in a low resource utilization rate. This waste gas contains approximately 22% of high-value components such as ethylene and ethane. Direct combustion of these components leads to the waste of high-quality chemical raw materials, leaving significant potential for quality improvement and cost reduction.

To cope with rising raw material costs and intensified industry competition, in May 2024, Daqing Petrochemical Company initiated the carbon dioxide recovery project, focusing on the resource utilization of low-value waste gas. The project adopts a mature pressure swing adsorption process, purifying the high-value components in the dry gas through molecular sieves, and the high-purity rich ethylene gas produced can be directly supplied to downstream units, achieving efficient and sequential utilization of resources.

In May 2025, the project successfully started up with the first feedstock injection. The high-value-added raw materials produced have been officially integrated into the production chain. The recycled low-cost ethylene raw materials effectively replace expensive purchased raw materials, expanding supply channels, reducing production costs, and minimizing resource waste, achieving a win-win situation of economic benefits and green emissions reduction.

During the initial stage of the new device's operation, affected by fluctuations in upstream conditions, the raw materials exceeded the standard, resulting in unstable product purity and operational fluctuations. There was no mature industry experience to refer to. Daqing Petrochemical quickly formed a breakthrough team, went to the site to investigate the root causes, conducted repeated experiments, and made every effort to solve production bottlenecks. The technical team innovatively introduced the "intermittent dehydration" operation method, optimized the operating parameters of core equipment, eliminating production hazards at the source. At the same time, the quality control system was upgraded, with the sampling frequency of materials increased to once per hour, establishing a closed-loop mechanism of round-the-clock inspection and analysis and daily review, providing comprehensive guarantees for stable and high-quality production of the device. After special calibration, the device achieved long-term stable operation, with the purity of the rich ethylene gas remaining stable above 95%, and the oxygen content in the system strictly controlled within the standard. Each year, it can recycle over 30,000 tons of high-quality ethylene resources. The team continuously optimized process parameters and completed nearly 100 rounds of refined adjustments. On February 2025, the monthly output of the device exceeded 3,000 tons, setting a new high since its commissioning.

This project fully leverages the integrated refining and petrochemical advantages of Daqing Petrochemical Company, increasing the daily ethylene output by 40 tons and significantly enhancing the overall industry efficiency. The successful technological transformation has transformed industrial waste gas into high-quality production raw materials, revitalizing existing resources and practicing the green and low-carbon development concept. It provides an excellent example for the recycling and utilization of waste gas resources in the petrochemical industry.
